Characteristics of Social Welfare



The Social Welfare System is a system through which the National Government and local governmental organizations provide necessary relief to the indigents, children requiring protection, fatherless families, elderly people with handicaps such as disabilities and people with disabilities, and to support their living and promote their self-sufficiency. The main characteristics of social welfare are as follows –

According to Wayne Vasey, the definition of Social welfare includes two main characteristics – 

  1. The utilization of welfare measures to support or strengthen the family as a basic social institution through which needs are met. These welfare measures include the well-being and interests of large number of people which comprises their physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and economic needs of the family members.
  2. Welfare measures have the intention of strengthening the individual’s capacity to cope with his life situation. The Social welfare system has the objective of creating the basic conditions that will enable all the members of the community in realizing their potential for growth and self-fulfillment. Regardless of physical psychological or social handicaps, person should be enabled to live, work and develop in a normal environment.
